Dad used to tell of his first self propelled combine, a 45 JD. It was one of a very few in the area at that time and most corn was still being picked in the ear. After finishing his own, he custom shelled corn all that fall and grossed enough income dollars to have an amount equal to what he paid for the combine.

That would be quite a feat to accomplish today.

He mentioned many times how lucky he was starting at the very worst of times as everything was up from there.
