Subject: What a nickel would buy

Pittsburg, Kansas
A nickel back then woukd be the equivellent of around a dollar to a dollar and a quarter of todays money.

A nickel candy bar was a big candy bar. At least the size of the double candy bars that sell for $1.25 in a convienience store now. And consider how much more efficiently sugar is raised and candy bars are produced now compared to then. Penny candy would have been more the norm for a kid to get back then. Nickel candy bar would have been a special occasion.

Heck I was born in 1954 and can still remember flavored pop being a nickel a bottle and Coke being a dime. The bottle deposit was a couple cents and I used to walk the highway in front of our house and pick them up to turn in for the deposit. Pick up three discarded bottles and I had myself a bottle of pop.
