I'll add my dad's story. Graduated 8th grade around 1930, a family of 12 kids. Grandpa sent him to the neighbor to work for board only. He would not have to feed one mouth. On hard days liking forking manure out of a bank barn, dad got a dollar but had to give it to grandpa. Don't know how many kids neighbor had at that time, probably just 1 or 2, but ended up with 19. He was one of a few that could afford a 13 year old hired hand who worked for board. Dads school was one room with 1st thru 8th grade and one teacher. They walked 2 1/4 miles one way and rode horses when it got cold.
Got married at 24 in 1940 and bought a 120 acre farm with house around 1944 for $100/acre. Rented a neighboring 100 acres around 1960 on 50/50 crop shares, raised 7 kids, grew corn, oats, hay, chickens both layers and broilers, hogs, milked cows and sold cream, custom baled hay and custom combined corn and later on beans (not many beans back then).
