Its not a mystery. As the cell walls rehydrate if they are too cold they become more brittle and can burst as they take on water. If they are warm, they are more flexible and will not burst - resulting in a live plant. Once the seed has imbibed the moisture it needs to sprout, then it is not an issue. A cold rain that soaks in to the seed depth will change the temp of the seed quickly.
