East Central Ia | I agree that if planted into moisture, which for me is 99.9% of the time, that seed will start absorbing that moisture quickly. I think the rain part of the equation is the period of time the ground may sit saturated, as well as how quickly that soil temperature might change.
I think a guy would be surprised how quickly a cold rain can bring soil temps down. I would think of it like ice in a cooler. You put your room temp beer into one cooler with only ice, put more beer into a cooler with ice water. Which beer will get cold quicker? I would think of this as cold soil and cold saturated soil. That ice water has more surface area to change temperature quickly.
Seed depth acts as insulation. Deeper planted seed into warm soil will stay warm longer especially with cold air temps. But once we through in that cold rain to penetrate the soil I would think depth is less of a factor.
