I find these numbers awfully suspect of inaccuracies. Do we know how this data was collected? what makes up these numbers?

Do they even pass the 'smell test' of rational reference? -ie this chart is telling me that cow/calf operations have been the most profitable segment of the beef market for the last ten years....REALLY, is that so?

is that why so many cow/calf guys have been bailing and packing up the pot trailers in the last 10 years? because of all the profits they were making? .......

Here's another chart, from a different source. It measures cow calf returns, on a per head basis. which one is right? the one where we made less then $50 a head for several years? or the one where we are making more than 100? Are either right? how was the data obtained?
