Subject: Still not sure what speed has to do with it

West Central MN
When I drove school bus back in college I once ran over a dog going about 5 MPH. I was still in first gear!!! The kids were right there and saw the whole thing as I had just dropped them off at their house in the afternoon. I just kept going about my route and never heard anything more about it.

When I was a kid, my Dad ran over one of our cats while backing out of the garage.

I have hit lots of deer over the years in various vehicles. The most interesting was a deer that I could see running across the field towards the road. I slowed down and was at almost a complete stop and the deer RAN INTO THE SIDE OF THE CAR!!! If I just would have kept going at normal speed we both would have been fine.

Which brings up an interesting point. I seem to actually hit more animals on the road when I try to react and do something to avoid them (like slowing down or swerving slightly) then if a person just keeps going.
