engbert engbert, please, I said what I said in jest! I just don't buy that the guys who has the highest herd average has the most profitable bottom line! What about organic guys? What about grazing guys? Not that I buy into those types of operations, but they say they are profitable with low inputs and relatively low production/cow. We already work long hours and have no interest in building freestall barns 'between milkings' so to speak.

And as far as forage quality goes, we hire that done, at the recommendation of the bankers who told us we didn't need any field equipment in order to milk cows. Heck they even told us in the 80's that we didn't need any land to milk cows.
