Subject: RE: DAIRY COWS

just a tish NE of central ND
Although it is often less that this, 60 lbs min is a common number ,with out much of anything special for feed other than good protein content alfalfa at the beginning weeks of the lactation and tapering down after 6-8 weeks continuously until end of lactation. If they don't produce well at the beginning of lactation it wont improve later ..... they only get worse as time goes on and cant be brought up much with effort to improve output. One warm day without water(water problems) will kill production...... you might as well dry them all up because you will be milking for nothing..
Some cows will push 100 lbs....... some only half of that. Lots of variables from cow to cow. When they go through the dry period........ NO PRODUCTION, but you still have to feed her.
Lots of variables in answers, but there are a lot of variables in feed, cows, conditions, operations and such too.
Personally, I'm glad to be out of dairy here in ND..... Dairy industry here is about dead here, I don't think you could find 150 dairy cows in all of Sheridan county right now.Probably closer to ZERO diary cows in Wells co.
