Subject: RE: When did your family immigrate to USA?

On August 6, 1874, 73 families left the small village of Kotosofka, in what is now Ukraine. My great, great grandpa was one of those 73 heads of family who left for America on that day. They traveled by horseback, horse and wagon, and train to Liverpool England where they boarded the City of Richmond to sail to New York City. 53 of those families came to Kansas. In New York they boarded a train headed for Kansas arriving in Peabody, Kansas September 3. From there they sent out scouts to look for a place to settle in Marion, McPherson, and Harvey counties. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad gave them a quarter section of land in McPherson County for religious and educational purposes and also built a 20 X 120 immigrant house to stay in that first winter. Most of those families settled on ground they bought from the railroad for an average price of $2.50 per acre. I happen to live a quarter section in Harvey County that was purchase from the government for the price of the $8.00 filing fee.
