Pedee, Oregon | My father's side, g g grandpa came to Kentucky from Wales on a 2 year contract to pay for his trip, in the 1890's. He was a coal miner, that's what the family did in Wales. Met his wife and moved to Black Diamond, Washington (SE of seattle) at the end of the contract. Worked in the mine there, g g grandma didn't like the mine, it was quite dangerous/crude. Convinced him to go to her family in Yakima, WA that had apple orchards. He learned how to prune apples and worked as what we would think "migrant labor" would be today. They eventually moved down the river to a house where the Trojan Nuclear plant was, west of Portland. He worked in a sawmill there pulling green chain into his 70's. My dad remembers him well.
My mom's side is Dutch and German, Dutch side came to New York in the 1600's. German side came to Tillamook on a boat in the 1890's. Some of the first few hundred European people to settle that area. | |
