But go back 30 generations -- about a thousand years. You have 2^30 spaces on your pedigree chart. That's over a billion people, at a time when the world population was less than a billion. If your ancestors were all from Europe, you are related to each ancestor a dozen times, on average. Go back ten more generations and it gets MUCH worse!
This is called pedigree collapse. The branches of our trees begin to intertwine and form something like a braided rope. | |
