 Floyd County, Iowa | I no longer raise hogs. We now buy butcher hogs from a neighbor that raises small batches and sells them to people that want "old fashioned" (his term) pork. He takes it to the locker and we pick it up when they have it done.
I've experienced foul tasting meat from the store, too, and that's why we buy local. Have not been disappointed buying local. You may want to try that route.
We also buy beef from another neighbor, usually take the whole critter, and give the kids each a bunch of meat.
We just like to know where it comes from and how it was raised and fed. Always tastes better that way ;-)
Another thing we've noticed is that certain lockers can absolutely ruin a nicely finished critter. | |
