Pittsburg, Kansas | The more I think about it, I'm satisfied stationary horse balers were common in my area some time soon after 1900. My family bought the farm I live on in 1870. Our barn was built between 1900 and 1902. It was built with an open drive through and hay was hand pitched on either side. But not long after a floor was added over the drive through to make a solid loft and loose hay was elevated via hay fork and rail that was installed. But I think it was only another few years before they started using the fork with baled hay. We used that loose hay fork for bales of hay up through the 1960's. Either six or eight 14x18 bales at a time, depending on how they were stacked on the wagon.
I'm satisfied by 1910 or 1920 hay baling with a horse powered stationary press was common in our area.
