niobrara nebraska
Grandpa passed 2 years ago left each of the kids an 80. Had enough cash in the bank/rent to pay for 2 years of the nursing home. He milked about 30 cows and custom hauled hay on a 240 his whole life. Grandma always had 100's of chickens. He talked about walking away from a homestead up by Dallas SD with his brothers. They all homesteaded next to one another. I asked him why he would leave "free" ground? He said it was either that or starve there during the 30's and the drought/dust bowls. Now that was an eye opener. No bailouts back then! Wasn't too many years and he bought his 240 for around 20 dollars an acre. He farmed about 50 acres of it. Not very good farmland. But he made a living. Today it is pasture. Now we pay taxes every year for what he paid for the farm..........Only in Nebraska!
