Have a friend of mine that is thinking about building about that same size house. Hire most of it done. Going to cost about $130/sq. ft.
Your 5 year plan sounds good. Just don't wait too long...like after the kids have grown up and gone. You, your wife, and kids might as well get as much time to enjoy living in the house as you can.
