Subject: RE: How do you manage potassium?

Little River, TX
I would say so also if it were not for the Vertisal soils I have. I find that potassium becomes entrapped in the spaces between the clay platelets.
The process of analysis opens the spaces between the clay platelets and the potassium is available to the analysis process but are not available to the crop. This would be in addition to the high CEC levels that also play a role in hiding the potassium from the crop.

For over 40 years I found this high pH, Excessively high CEC, Calcareous soil most perplexing. Very few of our University agricultural Staff mentioned of understood this soil.
It was a pair of Retired Soil Specialist who were able to enlighten me. In fact it is all contrary to the Politically Correct Word from on High.

So yes I agree. These fields have been in both cotton or alfalfa for 50 or more years and had pulled the soil analysis down to 320 ppm K. It was a shock to find the Truth as I knew it. We all knew this soil was rich in Potassium. I looked at the obvious indications of potassium deficiency before I stumbled on the truth as I now know it.
The official truth is still that any potassium in excess of 160 ppm is excessive, when my lying eyes are telling me that anything less than maybe 350 ppm K is deficient, HERE.

Thank you for your interest
