I can understand where the death of parent would shake your faith. Death is hard for the believer and unbeliever, especially when it is someone close. We ask why, why now, why this way, why her etc... The truth is we do not know. God knows. Death entered the world when sin entered the world. From an early age, man is aware that he will indeed die. We just don't know when or how. If not for death, we would all be stuck in this sin infected world indefinitely. Sometimes this broken world is still pretty enjoyable, and we wonder why would want to leave. If any of us had any clue how good things will really be in heaven, we would have no desire to be here or keep our family/friends here. We all cling to what we know.
The Christian faith is unique in that salvation comes from faith in Jesus Christ as your savior. The faith in Jesus Christ as your savior comes as a gift from God. He is clear about how he gives faith, through hearing the word, and the sacraments of Holy Baptism, and the Lord's Supper. Jesus preached in Matthew 22 about the kingdom of heaven being like a great wedding banquet. Everyone is invited, some people are just too busy to go. God is not dead.
