1 indicates trust and confidence. This from knowing the person or group has the knowledge and ability to show accurate results to prove their theory as in the theory of evolution.
2 indicates a 'belief' in religion. 'Belief' by definition has no proof to back it up.
So a person might 'believe' in the hypothesis of religion but unlike a theory a religion has no evidence or facts to back it up so only 'belief' is available.
No confidence without evidence.
