So what are the exact acres a farmer is supposed to farm?

Hilltop gave the answer. As much as you can farm with family members and (number of family members minus one) employees.

Why does that define a farmer? If a farmer has 4 family members vs the neighbor that has 3 family members, is the 4 member farmer a poorer farmer because he has more family members? Where is the limit? Why does it matter how many family members vs another make any difference?

I went on harvest with the best manager ever. At one point that season we were running 15 machines. Others on the same run ran 3 or 4 and were not as good of managers as the one I was with. I have neighbors farming 150 acres that are worse managers and farmers than some running 15,000. Other farmers running 2500 acres are worse farmers than some running 1200 acres.

This discussion makes zero sense in reality.

Edit to add: So if a family with 4 members works harder and smarter than the next family with 4 members and thus can buy more land and farm it better than the next neighbor that has 5 family members, who is the right “farmer”?
