Bremen, KS | Not quite as dramatic but early on in my ham radio career I had a strike not far away and a nice arc in my bedroom--my "shack", as it were. No damage except for my nerves! Since then I awaken at the slightest sound of thunder in the distance.
I have the tower and equipment in the shack grounded (earthed) and tied to the electrical service entrance ground rod. I also disconnect some antennas but figure that one of these days there will be a strike too close for comfort.
