| Batteries on EV’s contain coolant. Tesla claims coolant lasts the life of the battery, but it can still leak. Battery disposal for EV’s will become an issue as more are sold and the vehicles age. Small amounts of exotic materials that currently aren’t economical to reclaim.
Both ICE’s and EV’s have their positives and negatives. With an ICE the end users are exposed to the negatives of ICE right where they use it (smog, engine oil disposal etc.). I think that is a good thing as it led to changes to emissions systems to attempt to clean up cities pollution problems, people could see direct environmental effect of their cars.
With EV’s there will still be pollution generated somewhere to power the electrical grid whether it be from coal fired generation, nat gas fired generation, nuclear (and associated waste), solar/wind/hydro all have their own environmental impacts. The end user doesn’t “see” the environmental impact of the power generation that is far away from them and doesn’t realize that while their vehicle itself has zero emissions, there are emissions being generated somewhere to power their driving.
There is no free lunch when it comes to powering modern lifestyles....just some ramblings on a cold day. | |
