   I might be wrong, but to me the timing of the release of the N is the major factor. As i understand it when you do tillage that there is a fair amount of N released shorty afterwards. That might sound like a good thing, but there could be a problem in that there is more N available than the plant needs early on so that N could be lost before the plant needs it.
 Whereas when the biology releases the N it does it at a slower pace and provides it when the crop needs it the most, thus lowering N loss.
