SC Minnesota | I never thought no-till would work in my area (too cold/too wet). So I started with strip-till more than 15 years ago. I struggled to see the change in the soil structure and the soil seemed to be getting denser over time (4-5 years in a row of 6" plus rainfalls once or twice a summer didn't help). And then I started using cover crops across all my acres. The soil opened up and mellowed out and now I don't bother to strip corn stalks ahead of beans and in 2020 no-tilled my first couple fields of corn. Things are changing and most neighbors have been convinced that I'm not giving up on it. | |
