We lament how little Joe Average knows about our business ( agriculture), but  how many of us know the intimacies of  a business  surrounding... say  a  nuclear physicist.......or  a brain surgeon.  ???

Of course Joe Average  doesn't know much about what we do... he has had little genuine exposure to our  realities.    And the little bit he has had  is so far out of date without him realizing it....he still has romantic notions of Great Grandpa's little grey ferguson, and seeing 3 cows hand milked.

Someone who has only ever  had a wage   (  or lived off social security, )  and  never ran a business simply can't  be expected to understand  the  intricacies,      especially that one of  needing to spend it, because it will get taken away from you if you don't.

Most of us here think about the  cost   or value of something in terms of it's total price......  but that  is of little  consequence to many, who are only concerned about  how much it is a week...   How many weeks  seems to be of no significance to them.

Our realities are not shared by all.

You're 100% correct.........very few of us know a thimble-full of what it takes to run another type of business or career. But in the case of the OP, the statement came from someone who theoretically has been educated in the basics of Agriculture in a professional setting. I'd like to think somewhere in the Ag Instructor's classwork, there was at least some mention of accounting, general tax info, and banking. I think that's what disappointed me most in the OP's statement.
