Right now I have a fireplace that has fans on the bottom and is supposed to blow hot air out the top vents. But the design is bad so you almost have to imagine some air getting blown out. So what you guys are saying is I need to remove the current fireplace and look into a insert? Been looking at some that run around $2000.

Yes. If you search those forums for threads about fireplace inserts you will get a wealth of information. Or sign up an account on one of them, then post pictures of your existing fireplace and chimney and ask for suggestions. Those guys like to yak every bit as much as farmers and there are professional sweeps on both forums. They love pictures.

You can probably find a good insert for a about $1K, but then you'll need a chimney liner to go with it, etc. And the new woodstoves/inserts are not simple. They achieve their efficiency by burning the smoke more so than the wood directly. When the fire is on "cruise," you should be able to go outside and not see any smoke coming from your chimney.
