I agree with JohnW, everything he says.
A plain fireplace is just for looks or maybe a little inefficient heat in an emergency but it can never run as efficient as new stoves or inserts designed for that.

It is also a necessity to put a liner in an old chimney. Better still would be an insulated chimney. A new stove run correctly will not need an insulated chimney cleaned but an old chimney will creosote up and you will end up with a fire unless you sweep it regularly.
