I agree with Tiler. If heating is all you're after, a wood-stove insert is your best bet.

If you're determined to keep a fireplace, look into rumford fireplaces. In 1796, Count Rumford did a lot of research into what made an efficient fireplace. With the advent of woodstoves in the 1850's, and some consequent careless fireplace designs, the rumfords are rarely seen today, but are still the most efficient fireplace available. Rumford.com has a bunch of interesting reading about the subject, including some tips on making a modern fireplace more "rumford-like."
