In the 70s dad got a new fire grate that was hollow. It had a fan on one end and blew air through the grate and collected the heat that was there out into the room. Between that and adding a glass set of doors, it made a big difference. The glass collects and radiates some heat. They were vented at the bottom to let combustion air in.
