You want either a fireplace insert or a free-standing woodstove standing just in front of the fireplace. Inserts can retain a lot of the look of a traditional fireplace with all the efficiency of a modern stove, but require electricity for the fans. A free standing stove will look different, but most will function decently without electricity, plus you could cook on them if you had to.
