SE Wisconsin
"How do inserts spread the heat throughout the house?"

Heat will travel up and away from the stove, cold air will come in along the floor to the stove. Sounds trivial, but the extent at which that happens is interesting. It happens with each room that is connected to the next, regardless of whether on the same level as the stove, or on upper levels. Each room will have warm air entering at the ceiling, cold air leaving on the floor. Here, I can measure the air travel on cold days at about 60fpm, and can trace the exact path from furthest room, down stairs, along hallways, then straight to the stove. An outside boiler could act the same way, even if there was only one radiator in the house, located on a lower level. Whole house heating with one heat source.
