I'm not really a stocker, but sometimes we will graze the weaned fall calves during the summer. There are people that buy singles and put together a big bunch of calves. It probably takes a lot more skill to do this, but the best thing for a calf is grass. There are also some people that have a house and 40 or 20 acres in the country. They buy 5 or 10 head of junk calves to mow the grass down, then sell in the fall, probably don't make a lot.
