I consider myself a calf grower first-and then finisher-I seldom have problems after 6 weeks-buying backround calves I end up with about same problems-I slow grow the calves for about 160 days to build frame-theres a huge difference of a cow calf guy preconditioning and idiots-my post below shows what happens when you give them shots and 24hrs later there in the sale barn-
We have lots of roughage and only way to realize value here is to grow calves

here we have better luck being done buying by end of April-usually most fall calves are cleaned up- Jan and feb are good time to buy lite weight feeders weighing 400-500#-I tried reselling backrounded calves and got pounded at the sale so decided to feed them out once I got back on my feet in the late 80's and 90's
