As I recall when metric conversion came in in 1977 or thereabouts, the powers that be finally relented and accepted acres for things like chemical labels, etc. I think it was about the only thing from the imperial measure that could legally be used.
Funny thing, the gov't mandates two languages on labels, yet will not okay "bilingual" measurements.
