Western maple (Manitoba maple, Box elder) is a relatively soft wood, not as soft as aspen but also doesn't dry as easy-Birch, elm and ash are the only good burning western woods.

"Slabs" are a good price but because of their curved nature, you don't get a lot of lbs per cord
