What you are buying is energy.
Use the links provided by others to check heat value of the woods and then use that to help make your choice.
Check the price and decide which gives you the cheapest BTU's

Some woods burn 'easier' than others so you might put that in the equation.
We have heated totally with wood for 35 years now.
Different woods in our area but for example our Ash is good for heat but leaves a lot of 'charcoal' like ash that builds up in the firebox and you can not get any more heat out of it.
Mix a 'nicer' burning wood with it and it stays manageable.
Hard Maple is nice burning with lots of heat from a piece of wood.

Always cut our own wood from our own woodlots (too cheap to pay someone else) and so get a mixture of woods.
When using it for total heat we even like a little 'softwood' like Basswood for quick fire and just a little heat in spring and fall.
