Can you go too deep with a inline ripper?

Again, I'm asking - As I've little to no expernce dealing with hard pans ~
How would 5 ripper teeth, with 2-4 in wide points - create a deeper hard pan?
Now, lets assume, somehow the ripper moved the pan deeper - wouldn't it be better to have a deeper hard pan then a shollower one ?
