I humbly disagree, I think if you are going to test row spacing, it needs to be done at same populations or you are not isolating any one variable.

Similar to your bean tests you mentioned. Had they been done at the same populations, drill would have one hands down instead of finishing last...... Just a guess though since this is all hypothetical anyway.
