Subject: Re: vertical welding

Ontario
I was taught to weld by a Plater (shipbuilder from Newcastle) on vertical welds he does a Christmas tree motion with the rod pausing slightly at the sides but, stabbing it in and up to get the deep corner penetration. (he didnt do a root weld) We often went on big building sites, just welding a few specified cleats / brackets, sometimes just one on every grid line, first time we did it I didnt understand we spent more time dragging welder round sites than welding BUT found out later it was our welds that would be tested so many on specific grid lines Some of these companies knew their welders were not maybe up to scratch so hired us in just for the testing. SO this guy could weld. Just thought I add my bit. Looks to be lots of welding info out there, eg http://www.tpub.com/steelworker1/70.htm
