Vertical down looks nicer, but vertical up is actually stronger, because it doesn't incorporate slag into the weld bead. When welding down, the new weld tends to bury some of the old weld that gravity pulls down ahead of the rod. Some welders will run 6013 a little nicer than 6011 on AC.
