If you want, just spot weld it all the way to the top. Think it's preferred to down. Maybe slow, but you want it to hold. Was taught when welding up to keep the arc going by moving off to the side of the weld and then come back when the weld had cooled enough to hold another bead. Just takes a second. If you pull away from the steel when you are off to the side, it won't leave much steel to clean up with grinder. I prefer to leave the heat up in all my welds, and spot weld to prevent burn through. But I do have wire and you don't have to clean as much. And I triple weld everything, just a habit. Not certified, just works for me and my thousand acres of big rocks. js
