A couple years ago I was doing a story for the Des Moines Register on the upcoming harvest.  We went to the edge of a corn field for a picture and I picked this nice big ear for the photo.  We started talking how to estimate the yield.  I showed him the quick field test using that nice big ear.  I don't remember the exact yield I came up with but it was over 250 bushels per acre. I gave the normal caveat that this was just one ear in one location and was not representative of the whole field.  Well when the article came out there I was holding this nice ear with a caption that I was expecting to harvest over 250 bushels/acre.  Since then I don't like to give out expected yields either high or low.
