Gary Edwards Anamosa, Iowa | I normally don't start checking ears until end of august but you guy's got me curious so while checking for aphids in the beans (didn't find any) I stopped in the corn field next to the beans. It was split planted to two different LL corns. One had an average of 14 rows and was 46 long, the other was 18 around and 39 long (just starting to dent). I used my usual method of determining population - reach out and grab two stalks then count the ears between. Did this 3 times to count a total of 29 ears. Quick calculation came up with 205 for one and 223 for other. Too bad there were some yellow wet spots out in the middle of the field earlier on. I don't put a lot of faith in the calculations, but does give an indication from one field, one variety, how this year compares to past checks. |
