Iowa | I personally think putting it on with a totally tubular type setup would be the best. Couple of reasons - first the roots would grow down (for the most part) placing the nutrients below the seed will make root interception most likely. Second, I think that it is safer for the seed. I think you're on the right track as far as broadcasting and running starter, thats what I'm doing on a farm I have that is similar to what you're talking about. I do not agree with the theory about using all dry - its only 30% available year 1 in the best possible case, however I agree that you cannot just rely on a starter type program for all your fertility. Thats why the best case is to use both -- even ISU shows a profitable response to using a popup with lower testing soils -- but your best bet long term is to build your soil levels over time until the popup is no longer profitable. | |
