Fontanelle, IA | My question might sound a bit like an oxy-moron but here goes.....
This year I am going to run pop-starter fertilizer with my planter. As I've posted earlier, my heavy clay, sidehill soils are very low in both phosphorous and potassium. My thinking is that I'd like to run 5-7 gallons of 3-18-18 or 5-15-15+micropak.
My question is on the delivery of the starter: Should I rig up my planter to dribble the starter in the bottom of the trench ahead of the seed tube or can I dribble it on ahead of my closing wheels (I don't have the Y-Split It firmers). With this rate of fertilizer, will I see a difference in seed-fertilizer burn (lower germination) with one over the other. Personally, I'd think that splashing it onto the seed would be worse than pressing a seed into soil+starter? Any advice or first-hand accounts.
Many Thanks for all the help!
