Electronics are always on when 'powered off'. That power on button is similar to a keyboard key. It only conducts current when pressed. So a power controller must constantly monitor it. Power control circuits are always electrically powered.

Your generator was surging - creating high voltages that exceeded what electronics are rated for.  An example of why best protection for appliances must be inside that generator.  Not found in magic plug-in boxes.

Devices with a universal supply probable were not damaged. A universal supply means all AC voltages (in every nation) from 85 to 265 volts is sufficient (save).
