Would a GFCI outlet help?? I think everything in my kitchen is on one.

GFCI is protection of humans. Nothing more. Refrigerator should not be on a GFCI, Since that only increases other threats to humans (ie food poisoning).

A surge anywhere inside means nothing will do effective protection. Protection only exists when a surge connects low impedance (ie less than 10 feet) to earth ground BEFORE entering. Only then is a surge not anywhere inside.
