Subject: RE: surge protector vs. the refrigerator

Saginaw Bay Area - Michigan
Many electronic failures are from brownouts (low voltage) and not from spikes. Most surge protectors do not help much with surges/spikes and almost none will do anything with a brownout.

If you really want to put something in to protect it from the AC line, you'd want to isolate it and put it on a UPS/Battery (most UPS will do both functions). When you have a momentary power outage, that quick flick on/off, that's when most of the "damage" will happen and if the device is on a battery, it will be protected from that hit.

I'm not recommending you put your fridge on an UPS.
Putting it on a surge protector is generally a waste of $.
Most electronic failures "these days" are from faulty/shoddy components or design and not from AC voltage fluctuation. Lightning strikes are a whole different animal and most surge protectors will not help with those.
