Like said, if that's the whole story it's pretty crappy of the Dad. It's also short sighted of the son though.
If you're not building ownership at the beginning, get the heck out. If there is no risk to you, you're not building ownership. So if you've got nothing to lose by farm failure other than your job, get the heck out.
This is a simple test of whether the future you are pursuing has a future or not.
