Near-north Ontario, French River | Distance to market can have some impact depending on the scale of the operation. Our local greenhouse produce goes all over north America. Chicago, New York, Montreal , Toronto and even California and Texas. ..Its all about being able to supply the big chain stores year around. Talked to a trucker one day, he was taking Ontario tomatoes south to Texas, and strange as it seems, bringing Texas tomatoes back into Ontario. Probably doesn't happen like that year around , but with supply chain commitments all sorts of weird things happen. One year there was a big freeze in the US south, where BurgerKing and McDonalds was sourcing there tomatoes.....so for a couple of weeks you couldn't buy a burger with tomatos on it.... all the while hundreds of tons a day were being produced locally but since the restaurant chains had supply agreements with producers elsewhere they refused to buy local product....
