Near-north Ontario, French River
Distance to market can have some impact depending on the scale of the operation. Our local greenhouse produce goes all over north America. Chicago, New York, Montreal , Toronto and even California and Texas. ..Its all about being able to supply the big chain stores year around. Talked to a trucker one day, he was taking Ontario tomatoes south to Texas, and strange as it seems, bringing Texas tomatoes back into Ontario. Probably doesn't happen like that year around , but with supply chain commitments all sorts of weird things happen. One year there was a big freeze in the US south, where BurgerKing and McDonalds was sourcing there tomatoes.....so for a couple of weeks you couldn't buy a burger with tomatos on it.... all the while hundreds of tons a day were being produced locally but since the restaurant chains had supply agreements with producers elsewhere they refused to buy local product....
